The Kellogg Health Scholars Program developed future leaders committed to achieving health equity and eliminating health disparities. Our two-year postdoctoral fellowship program trained a cadre of leaders skilled in research on the social determinants of health, academic-community partnering, community-based participatory research, and application of research to strengthen advocacy and achieve policy change. Program Overview

The vision of the new Kellogg Health Scholars Program reflects the interconnected roles of research, policy and practice in reducing and eliminating health disparities, and the development of academic, policy and community leaders who understand and can influence these related activities. The program will provide a comprehensive approach to achieving a closer connection between scholars and those engaged in community, policy-making, policy advocacy and practice.

Program Goals

  1. Develop a cadre of future leaders in academic, policy-making, policy-advocacy and health-related agencies with an understanding of social determinants of health disparities, the role of communities in disparities research and policy development, and how health disparities research can influence federal, state and local health policy.
  2. Increase the racial and ethnic diversity of faculty at public health and other health professions schools and in leadership positions at health-related policy, advocacy and practice organizations.
  3. Provide postdoctoral training opportunities for future leaders, incorporating skills in
    • research enhancing understanding of the causes of health disparities,
    • translation and dissemination of research to maximize its value in advocacy and policy-making,
    • development of partnerships between academic institutions, community-based organizations, and organizations engaged in public health practice,
    • understanding and applying the principles of community-based participatory research, and
    • multi-cultural competency.
  4. Develop further leadership skill training in areas such as
    • preparing academic publications, presentations, and speeches;
    • designing research projects and obtaining research and project grants;
    • identifying, evaluating and managing financial and human resources;
    • developing, monitoring and evaluating programs; creating and sharing an organizational vision;
    • working within minority-led and minority-serving research, advocacy, and policy organizations and building organizational networks and coalitions;
    • organizing teams; public speaking, chairing meetings;
    • ability to partner with communities, and
    • working effectively with political processes, policy and media communities, and with county, city and state boards, commissions and agencies.
  5. Enhance the capacity of community-based organizations working in communities experiencing health disparities to initiate and participate in health disparities research, to apply this research in addressing their own health challenges, and to advocate effectively for policy changes that address these disparities.
  6. Conduct ongoing program evaluation to achieve quality management, assessment of goals and measurement of the program’s impact on enhancing leadership to address health disparities.
  7. Develop and implement a strategy to assure the continued growth, sustainability and institutionalization of the programs involved.
