James is a 57-year-old man living in the suburbs of a large city. His mother died at age 55 from Type 2 diabetes. He has developed Type 2 diabetes at an older age and has struggled to manage it his entire life. He has tried a number of different medications to get off insulin, but nothing has worked.

My 20s and early-twenty-something years were spent as a fat nerd. I was a social drinker, enjoyed a drink with friends, and was not afraid to party. Thankfully, I was blessed with a relatively low-grade type 2 diabetes diagnosis, and despite a few hiccups, I managed to maintain a fairly healthy lifestyle. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about what works and doesn’t work for diabetes management. I’ve also come to the conclusion that most of the information out there is just plain wrong, and that’s a big problem.

In the summer of 2010, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. That same year, my doctor told me that I had to stop eating sugar and start eating less carbs. I was already a vegetarian, so I decided to try a low carb diet. I spent the next three years eating less than 120 grams of carbohydrates a day — a goal that was nearly impossible to keep up. I spent my time traveling, working, and occasionally eating out. I managed to get by, but I was always tired and hungry, and I wanted to find a healthier way to eat. James has had type 2 diabetes for almost 20 years and has had to adjust his medication on a regular basis. He couldn’t afford to purchase insulin when he had to retire due to his high blood sugar. Then he discovered a low-carbohydrate diet. As recounted by his wife, this is his story:

For more than 20 years, my spouse has had type 2 diabetes. He was a merchant marine engineer who had to maintain his blood sugar under control in Alaska in order to have his license renewed by the US Coast Guard. We went to the American Diabetes Clinic for many years after metformin failed, and the nutritionist continued bringing us to the table and talking to us about a balanced diabetic diet. Breakfast consisted of oatmeal and blueberries with skim or fat-free milk, lunch consisted of tuna salad with water and light mayonnaise served with toasted wheat bread, and dinner consisted of a small steak and red potatoes (which do not spike blood sugar like Idaho potatoes and other white varieties).

Three additional tablets and insulin after he received insulin and the doctor became uncomfortable because he couldn’t manage his weight and blood sugar….. If you are tested and your blood sugar is high, the clinic says all you have to do is inject extra insulin!

For years, he battled with his weight, and when his doctor told him he had uncontrolled diabetes, he couldn’t renew his driver’s license!

We couldn’t afford insulin under Medicare after retirement, so we converted to LCHF!

And he achieved his weight target by losing 25 kg (55 pounds)!

Jason Fung has been a blessing in our lives. We began keto in March 2018, and within six weeks, he was off insulin and just taking metformin twice a day; now, seven months later, we’re fasting 20:4, OMAD, and he’s dropped 55 pounds (25 kg) to achieve his goal weight! He lost his license to work on the ship, but it was too late. Fast forward three weeks, and he awoke blind in his right eye. He is currently visiting a retinitis specialist who is attempting to preserve his vision. Hopefully, he will not lose his sight, but it seems that he will. He had a series of injections in both eyes to attempt to block blood vessels from crossing his retina, followed by two more injections and a laser, as well as eye drops to alleviate the strain.

If only people realized how critical it is to manage long-term diabetes since it destroys internal organs! Dr. Berg, Dr. Bijl, and Jason Fung have all made lengthy posts on Facebook and in our peer group.
