Yoga is a centuries-old practice that has been practiced by many different cultures around the world for thousands of years. Yoga can teach you to be mindful, connect with your body, and relax in an otherwise stressful life.

Yoga is a great exercise for beginners. It has many benefits and can be done anywhere, but it’s not easy to get started with yoga. Below are some of the reasons why yoga can seem impossible for beginners. Read more in detail here: why can t i do yoga.

Factual Check

If you only had thirty seconds:

Before you step foot on a mat for the first time, yoga appears like a simple and laid-back activity. Many new yogis ask why yoga is so challenging. For most beginners, yoga is challenging for the following primary reasons:

  • Yoga positions are physically challenging; if you don’t have a solid foundation in fitness, you’ll probably find many of them challenging.
  • We are not used to breathing deeply with our entire lungs, which adds to the difficulty of our yoga practice.
  • concentrate on mindfulness — yoga teaches us to be present and experience every emotion and feeling that arises, which may be challenging for many people. We spend a big portion of our lives mindlessly.

Is yoga challenging for beginners?

Since yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, it has evolved into a discipline that covers practically every aspect of life, including what to eat, how to exercise, how to care for your mind, and how to live a fulfilling life filled with connection and compassion.

Years might be spent reading all the philosophical writings on yoga, instruction manuals, and experimenting with various yoga forms. Yoga is challenging for novices since there is so much information available.

In addition, novices who attempt yoga for the first time sometimes get confused by the variety of positions and the fast-paced nature of the class. The only thing you’re attempting to do is avoid passing out in the middle of class, so it’s demoralizing to watch yogis around you who are strong enough for headstands and flexible as jelly.

Take heart! Yoga might be challenging for beginners, but it can grow easier with practice. Yoga requires patience and time, just like anything else in life. You will gradually learn about yoga philosophy as you develop your postures, and you’ll be astounded to discover that over time you become more flexible, powerful, and educated about the history of yoga.

2/3 Is it typical for yoga to be difficult?

I say yes a million times over. Many individuals often believe that yoga is merely stretching or a fairly simple physical exercise before realizing that it is quite difficult.

These are the three basic explanations for why yoga is often challenging:

Body positions

Many yoga asanas may be rather unpleasant if you don’t understand your body and how to modify the position to make it comfortable for you. In addition to having to move your body in a million different ways simultaneously (just look at the Revolved Half Moon position), you also need to have the ideal combination of strength, flexibility, and joint stability to master certain fundamental yoga poses.

You generally can’t claim to have the ideal degree of fitness unless you participate in sports full-time.

We often have several imbalances. Some people have strong joints but poor joint mobility. These novice yogis often show up for a yoga session expecting to do some light stretching or exercise only to discover that yoga is more difficult than they anticipated. They are taken aback when a seemingly simple position, like Downward-Facing Dog, for instance, calls for full-body flexibility.

Others struggle with endurance and strength-building postures because they are overly flexible and may twist themselves into a pretzel. While having trouble breathing throughout Sun Salutations and other standing sequences, these newbie yogis shine during the class’s final stretching session.

There are also those who enroll in yoga classes without having any prior expertise in physical fitness and begin developing their strength and mobility from beginning.

Is it normal for yoga to be hard? Yes, many yoga postures aren't easy! Many yoga poses are challenging!

breath management

The power of breath is one bodily function that we often overlook. We’re mindlessly inhaling while slouched over the computer, using barely a portion of our lungs.

Beginners who begin practicing yoga often discover that they must relearn how to breathe and fight to overcome their previous breathing habits. Yoga becomes much more challenging when you have to control your breath during quick yoga movements.

Mental clarity

In yoga, we’re practicing poses and breath management. But most importantly, we’re practicing the skill of being present.

Yoga is challenging for everyone since we’re all living lives that are rushed and on autopilot (that includes yogis with years of experience as well).

You’ll never be able to completely control your wandering thoughts. However, you might catch more glimmers of silence as you practice. Your everyday life will then reflect this, and you’ll feel less worried and more focused.

Why does yoga first hurt?

Yoga may sometimes be a bit painful. Since you’re using your body in ways that you haven’t been used to, it seems sense that it can feel awkward or unpleasant at first.

In yoga positions, you should, however, avoid any form of discomfort. If your body tells you to stop, listen to it and do so.

Keep your efforts within your capacity. Yoga does not require you to extend further or maintain a position longer than the person to your right or left. You must practice self-discipline, achieve self-control, be aware of your limitations, and discipline both your mind and body.

How quickly does yoga become more manageable?

Within a few weeks of consistent yoga practice, you should feel more at ease in yoga positions. During the first three to six weeks of consistent yoga practice, you’ll probably notice an increase in your flexibility and a strengthening of your muscles.

It could take a few months to properly regulate your breath and begin to regain your attention during a yoga practice if you are experiencing mental issues.

If it keeps you motivated, you may make small, realistic objectives for yourself. Don’t focus on them too much, however. After all, practicing yoga is what matters most, not being flawless.
