I was excited to find a yoga mat in the house that I, well, didn’t have to buy. I have never really had an interest in yoga, but I thought it would be cool to start. I have never been to a yoga class, so I headed to a local studio – AYOGA – to start. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. When I was in my 20s, I ignored my inner voice of self-doubt. I felt that I should be doing something more “productive” with my life, so I didn’t pursue an interest in the arts or culture. My lack of passion for the things I loved eventually caused me to feel like I was wasting my time.

I, like you, am a person, which implies we are both awareness floating within a flesh sack supported by bones. The mind-body dichotomy retains its mystique, just as it did when ancient thinkers contemplated thinking and subsequently contemplated the connection between those ideas and the physical form in which they are contained. Yoga is what motivates me to investigate the wonder of life in both the practical and metaphysical realms. 1. It helps me to get out of my own self-centered thoughts.

I don’t know about you, but I spend the bulk of my time thinking about myself. If I’m hungry, what I should wear tonight, what I did yesterday, and what I’m going to do tomorrow are all things that come to mind. I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I I am always thinking about myself, and this is the source of my unhappiness. I’m less pleased the more I think about myself. Yoga teaches me to focus my personal preoccupation on the needs of others. I feel more at peace within myself the more I prioritize assisting others around me and care for the creatures on this world.

2. Keeps me on my toes

Let’s be honest. When you’re hungover and smelling like stale American Spirits, the last thing you want to do is perform a Downward Dog. I avoid making harmful and self-destructive choices because I am dedicated to my practice.

3. It makes me feel powerful.

Putting my body to work and developing over time reminds me of how capable I am. I don’t need assistance with my luggage; I can lift furniture, toss my 35-pound 3-year-old in the air, climb mountains, swim across lakes, and run long distances… I don’t feel restricted by my physical self, which is a liberating feeling.

4. Reminds me to take a deep breath

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on the verge of losing my cool and psychically eviscerating someone who has irritated me, but instead took a long breath and kept my cool. The capacity to respond to violence in a peaceful manner has greatly improved my interpersonal relationships and reduced my stress. The more I connect with my breath, the clearer my thoughts become, which makes me a better person and a more patient parent.

5. Controls one’s desires

We all have urgent wants, such as “I need that slice of cake,” “I have to have those yellow suede boots,” or “if they don’t kiss me right now, my face will implode.” Of course, it may seem essential at the time, but taking a step back to consider why you want what you want can reveal that you desire a lot less than you believe.

6. Assists me in staying focused

We are bombarded with diversions in today’s society. And now that we have cellphones, we have portable devices that pull us into a vortex of being somewhere other than where we are right now. When was the last time I emptied my bowels while not scrolling through Facebook? Every day, I have to make a deliberate choice to escape the craziness of contemporary life and really focus on what is in front of me – whether it’s work, housework, or spending time with people. I want to be someone who is experiencing it firsthand.

7. Assists Me In Dealing

It’s true that life may be a drag. It may be great and lovely, but it can also completely devastate you. That isn’t likely to change anytime soon. It’s inevitable that you’ll have bad days; it’s part of the human experience. Although we have no control over life’s complexities, we do have influence over how we cope with and respond to them. I’ve been meditating every day for almost 5 years, and although it hasn’t made my life any simpler, it has vastly improved how I deal.

8. It Unites Me With The Divine

My closest buddy died the same year I began practicing yoga. I was 20 years old at the time, and the loss of someone close to me had completely crushed me. My grief was tremendous, and I felt completely shattered. The more lost I became, the more I looked to yoga’s teachings for guidance.

During those years, I began to understand the everlasting essence of love. Even though my buddy was no longer physically there, our bond remained unbreakable. This, I believe, was the most precious gift of all.

I used to think that yoga was a typical exercise that was just for “entertainment.” It’s not. Yoga is a practice of well-being. It’s about focusing on the present moment and accepting what is in front of you. It’s about listening to your body. It’s about committing yourself to a regular practice.
