The benefits of yoga are numerous and vast. It is a practice that can be done for both physical and mental health. Yoga can promote physical health in a number of ways: the strengthening of bones, the reduction of stress, the quieting of the mind, the improvement of posture, the improvement of the overall flexibility of the body, and the improvement of the overall flexibility of the mind. Yoga can also promote mental health by improving focus and attentiveness. Yoga can also promote emotional health in a number of ways: the expression of feelings, the release of emotions, the encouragement of self-awareness, and the encouragement of mindfulness.

Whether it’s your first time trying yoga or the hundredth, both beginners and experienced yogis can benefit from a yoga routine that’s meant to be more than just an exercise session. Since yoga is a holistic lifestyle, it’s important to understand the benefits of this ancient philosophy.

Yoga isn’t just for those over 60. It’s for every age, from all walks of life. I know because I’m a yoga instructor (I have my yoga teacher certification, too!) and I have a lot of teenagers and pre-teens in my classes. The benefits of yoga go far beyond the physical. A study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health found that teens who took a yoga class had a significant improvement in their health.

Scientific and practical evidence supports many of the recognized benefits of yoga. From the physical to the mental to the spiritual, dedicated yogis around the world rush to their mats to reap the benefits.

And now a recent study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics shows that even high school students can enjoy the same benefits as older yogis.

At the end of the 10-week study, the researchers found that the high school students who had practiced yoga during gym class scored higher on psychological tests measuring anxiety, depression and bad mood than the teens who had not done yoga. Teens who did yoga reported fewer negative emotions during the 10-week study than those who did not. It’s incredible, isn’t it?

That’s what prompted us to put together our top five benefits of yoga for teens. If you’re a teen yourself, the parent of a teen, or just a yogi looking for new reasons to get on the mat, check it out!

1. Physics

The physical benefits of yoga for teens are very similar to those of yoga for adults. After all, the word yoga in Sanskrit means union, so it makes sense that many of its benefits are the same!

Yoga builds strength, increases flexibility, stretches muscles, improves coordination and balance, strengthens the core, and helps restore posture after a day of sitting at a desk (or smartphone!).

2. Education

When you’re a teenager, there’s no shortage of distractions – from what to wear to the Friday night football game to who loves whom – there are far more interesting things to think about than getting the right accent in Spanish class.

Yoga can help teens mentally focus on the task at hand. By practicing living in the moment on the mat, young people will be able to focus more on the present moment off the mat.

3. Emotional

By practicing living in the moment on the mat, students become more aware of their emotions. Yoga allows them to get in touch with their deepest layers and better understand what they are feeling. By better understanding their emotions, adolescents can deal with them in a more appropriate way.

Emotional intelligence is a very powerful thing to learn at a young age.

In addition to connecting with the emotions, yoga also promotes self-love and self-acceptance. This benefit is especially important for teens who struggle with their body image. It’s a great way to learn to love yourself and appreciate your body for what it is and what it can do, not for what it looks like. By doing this, we develop compassion for ourselves, which then translates into compassion for others.

4. Mental

The mental benefits of yoga are pretty well documented and, as the above study showed, teens who practice yoga are more positive mood, less anxious and depressed, and enjoy the asana practice immensely.

With the stress and anxiety that comes with exams, entrance exams, recitals and all the other stresses that high school students suffer from these days, yoga can be a step in the right direction.

5. Social

Yoga promotes connection. As mentioned earlier, it means unity in Sanskrit. By understanding that each person is a whole, teens can learn to be more accepting of each other, regardless of their affiliation, social interests, or popularity.

Yoga allows no judgment, and the more we practice, the more we will accept and the less we will judge in our daily lives. Yoga helps teens be more compassionate with each other.

And while this list is by no means exhaustive, it’s just a little fuel to ignite the fire of yoga in your teenager!

Yoga is not a religion, it is a philosophy that teaches self-reliance, self-discipline, and self-awareness. Yoga is not something that you do in order to look good, but instead a lifestyle that helps to improve the quality of your life. I believe that the best way to start is to find a class that matches your needs. For example, if you are a young person that wants to lose weight and gain self-confidence, you may want to try a yoga class that focuses on stretching and toning, rather than one that focuses on meditation and breathing techniques..
